The Holidays.

My folks were in this weekend, so a lot of Christmas shopping and stuff ensued. Yesterday, they had some friends over that live nearby, and I cooked some Chicken Marengo (one of my favorites), then went fishing for a few hours.

They just left this morning for a couple days, then my entire family descends on my place Christmas Eve for a couple days. I get along with my family -- we all get along with each other pretty well -- but it will be a little overwhelming when they're all here.

In the meantime, I have a couple days.

what is chicken marengo?

It's a chicken stew kind of thing. Chicken, carmelized onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, some wine or beer, nice herbs, whole black olives, all over rice.

The story goes that Napoleon's field chef cooked it for him after one of his battles, after the chef picked up a little bit of this and that growing nearby (or appropriating it from the nearest farmhouse). Napoleon liked it so much, he made his chef cook it after every battle. I, of course, have altered the recipe a bit (no Napoleon complex here;)

Yes, I can actually cook when the mood strikes...like, say, when an icon grabs my eye.

Family around makes it weird to LJ. Especially since my family doesn't know LJ even exists (I don't think...) and I want to keep it that way ;)

It's a secret. Or, more accurately, I'm not sure yet. Heh. Actually, I know two out of the four dishes, and I know the theme, I just have to think up the rest. Looks like there will be 10 for dinner this Christmas, not as bad as some years, but still a lot of cooking. Pictures will be forthcoming soon after :)
