Sep. 28th, 2004 01:34 pmFlorida Travel: Ran out to Melbourne Friday night with Christey to make a wedding, then drove back to Tampa Bay Sat afternoon in front of the hurricane. Weathered that, then drove out to Melbourne again yesterday morning with my mom and sister to check my parents' condo then drove back to Tampa Bay again last night ahead of the mandatory curfew (on the Melbourne side, not here).
Amazing damage out there, and yet again, it's amazing how much was spared. Demolished buildings next door to buildings missing a few shingles. Large boats blown up to the side of roads, near marinas with sailboats bobbing passively in the breeze.
My parents' condo is on the top floor of a six-story building. The condo is missing some wallboard, most of the rest is damaged. Missing windows. Carpet is trashed between soakings of salt-laden water followed by stuffiness due to no power. The smell isn't too nice. There's some roof damage, but not like the building next door, missing a quarter of their roof. Major structure is still sound, though. The maintenance crews are already talking about replacing all the drywall in the condo, once the roof gets fixed.
My place was spared completely. My boat is bobbing passively in the breeze. Hurricane #4 in two months, and things are still better than they probably have a right to be.
