I've actually met 4 people in person who were from England that I met online (but not on LJ). Luckily they all had the money to fly over for a visit (different times - they didn't know each other). And I guess I met a few more when I went to England as well (yes, I had a fetish for Englishmen). Although nowdays, I can't imagine anyone wanting to fly very much... and then you still have the issue of 'your work visa application or mine' if you want to try for anything real.
I only know of one LJer on my list that lives here in Fort Worth. It would be EXTREMELY interesting to go to an LJ event and actually meet the people you 'talk' to and read things about all the time.
