Aug. 2nd, 2005 02:57 pmSo, today was John Bolton's first day at the UN. Bush did a recess appointment, which has some democrats up in arms about circumvention of the power of the Senate, conveniently forgetting Clinton's 150+ recess appointments, which had republicans up in arms about circumvention of the power of the Senate, when they happened to forget Reagan's 140+ recess appointments, which had democrats up in arms about circumvention of the power of the Senate. And Eisenhower, who recess appointed three Supreme Court justices, is too far down the chain to even speak about with a straight face. It sucks, but it happens to be constitutional, which is a refreshing change for Presidents and Senators of any party.
So, today was John Bolton's first day at the UN. He's smart. He's crafty. He dislikes and distrusts the entire practical concept of the UN. He's universally regarded as both a hardass and an asshole by anyone who has worked closely with him. Other countries are publicly taking a wait-and-see view of him, yet privately are rolling their eyes and think he's a nut. In other words, he's the perfect representative of America to the rest of the world.
