One good thing about the near miss from Hurricane Dennis is it seemed to kill the red tide. I used to have tons of dead fish floating in the canal, with occasional waves of tear-gas-like lung burning when the...organism (it's not algae, it's not plankton*) ran high.

Now, I'm seeing baitfish swarm in the canal again. No dead fish. There are still a few floating horseshoe crabs, which will probably decompose sometime around the turn of the century. The housefly population is booming from the feast of the last few weeks, but another couple weeks and they'll be gone, too.

It's getting pleasant again to live on the water.

* Edit: Apparently, the dinoflagellate Karina brevis, the red tide organism, is both an alga and a plankton. While it seems to occupy an interesting taxonomical niche, I think it's just plain annoying.
