Feb. 25th, 2005 10:28 amOne of the benefits of a lot of travel....
...wait, I wouldn't exactly call it a benefit.
One of the self-defense moves learned through a lot of travel is that there is more than one way to get from A-B. In fact, there may be dozens.
I had to spend an extra day in Atlanta due to work. So, yesterday afternoon, I get to the airport, prepared to hitch a ride south on Delta after I missed my flight the night before. There were five more flights leaving that day for Tampa, and no seats. The airline rep suggested I leave first thing in the morning...no go I said. I wanted to be home. So, then she suggested that I could pay $250 for an upgrade to a first class ticket, but I said no to that as well. She checked Melbourne for me (where Christey was yesterday, and is now), but those were full. So, I suggested Orlando, and lo and behold, there was a flight leaving one hour from then.
A few years ago, I got diverted to Orlando when there was some bad weather in Tampa. The airline put us on a shuttle that drove to the Tampa airport, so I knew such a shuttle existed. When I found the counter in the Orlando airport, I asked how much the shuttle was...$165. I'm afraid my eyebrows must have raised. He looked at me and said $150. I said no thanks and started to walk away. He called out $140. I was two counters away and he was still calling $125.
I went to Hertz. Got a Dodge Neon or some such fuel-sipping compact. $50. Drove it to the Tampa airport, dropped it off at Hertz on the bottom part of the parking garage, then took the elevator to the 4th floor where I had parked my car.
It was foggy last night, and warm and humid now. Home.
