My weekly catch-up
Oct. 27th, 2004 02:50 pmThe cross-Florida trip went well, except for the hotel thing on Friday night. I expected Melbourne's hotels to be mostly closed, but they weren't. Most were open -- and completely full. Hurricane refugees for the most part, plus some tourists, and the weekend of BikeToberFest in Daytona pretty much filled the rest of the rooms. I tried Vero Beach to Cocoa, and finally settled in Orlando (a 30-45 minute drive from Melbourne). The Orlando airport hotel rooms were all full as well, all dozen or so of them, but I found one an exit away with an empty parking lot. Pays to be a local sometimes. Total miles, a little over 600 (call it 1000 km) in two days.
My leg is still sore from the dock-striking incident, but the bruise is almost faded and it gets better every day. A little bit. It's probably going to be a month or so before it's back to normal. I bought myself a cane so I can imitate the snow-birds and to keep some weight off of it. I don't need it all the time, but as the day goes on, it gets a little stiff. Ibuprofen is still the best medical invention since antibiotics.
The boat is coming along, I think I got all the wood rot out of it, and I'm in the process of cutting new pieces out of marine plywood and epoxying with sealing/waterproofing epoxy. Once set, I need to cover with a standard stiffening fiberglass epoxy and start reassembling.
My day-job is dying a slow, not-so-painful death. I'm supposed to hear soon when my last day is, as they aren't going to renew my contract. I'm not too broken up about it, except a) I have no idea when my last day will be and b) My next day-job is probably set up already, but I have no idea when they will be ready for me. So far, the best estimates are a) in the next week or two and b) December 1st, which gives me a couple weeks of downtime in between. I predict much boat maintenance in the interim.
The weather is lovely, lately. Mid-60s at night, 70s during the day (call it a spread in the low-20s for you Celsioids). Haven't had any rain in over a week, and none forecast for the next week, which is good for my dismantled boat.
Anyone going to watch the lunar eclipse tonight?
I have some side-job work this weekend in Atlanta, so I'm bringing Christey to show her my old hometown. We're staying at the Peachtree Westin, my favorite hotel (the tallest hotel in the Western Hemisphere!) with a fantastic view of the city.
Speaking of Christey, I think if she were a mutant and accepted into the X-Men organization, her mutant power would be: "The Human Caller-ID". Many times over the last couple months, she's asked me about someone at the exact moment they have called/text-messaged my cellphone. It's happened with The Onts in Vegas,
bookstar, and a couple times with me calling in just as she messages me asking how I'm doing. I wonder what kind of costume would go with The Human Caller-ID? A revealing one, I would hope;)
