It was a great weekend, but a long one. My brothers, sister (and sisters-in-law), niece, niece-or-nephew to be, and a few friends. We had a BBQ luau Friday night (I made chicken kabobs).

Yesterday, everyone went home, so my sister and I went to a reef 10 miles offshore to do some fishing. I caught something big off the bottom that was not budging. A large grouper or ray or something like that. It finally snapped the line and I guess I'll never know what "the big one" was. My sister caught a nice spanish mackerel. There were barracuda circling the boat, waiting for us to bring something nice up from the depths, but they were pretty frustrated -- one went after the mack like lightning, but the mack was too agile (though not agile enough to escape my sister).

Then we started catching shark. I fought one for a good 15 minutes, a four-foot blacknose, then we just kept bringing them in. It got old a little quick -- I was looking for grouper, not shark. We cut the lines next to the boat to keep them relatively unstressed (and to keep the fingers on my hand intact).

Normally, we'll jump off the boat when we're hot and go swimming to cool off. Between the 'cuda and the sharks, however, that wasn't really an option. We got back home and I was a minor biohazard of sweat and baitfish.

I love my boat. Even though the interior is really falling apart. I was hoping to work on the seats this fall when it's cooler -- I may have to think of something else before then.

Shark picture after the cut. Don't click if fishing images disturb you.
