Jun. 24th, 2004 09:21 amAh, what an interesting day yesterday!
I bought a boat.
I saw an ad for a nice boat at a good price down in North Ft Myers, so I blew off the afternoon, grabbed my sister, and drove south. A couple hours later, I saw the boat that was advertised...and it was pretty beat up. The camera was very kind to it in the ad.
But! A few blocks away was another boat dealer and they had a great boat for sale on their lot. It's a 21.5' Larson, with a cuddy cabin, a newly rebuilt inboard/outboard Chevy 305 V-8, and an almost perfect hull. The paint is old (which was a good thing, as I could see there wasn't any hull damage covered up by paint) and the interior is ragged, but that's surface stuff. The boat itself is solid. Since it was originally a lake-boat in New Hampshire (it's been in Florida for 3 years), the majority of its life was fresh-water pampering, and it shows.
I put down a deposit, and I drop the rest and pick it up Saturday. Rather, on Saturday it getsdumped placed gently in the water in Punta Gorda, and I boat it up to my place, which will be around 100 miles (160km) through the intracoastal and Gulf of Mexico.
I'm such an absent-minded goof, though. I brought my camera, but after talking to the mechanic, and doing all the paperwork, I completely forgot to take a picture. Below the cut is a pic I found on the internet, which looks like a close cousin.
Odd thing: I'm driving outside of Punta Gorda on one of the back roads to the first dealer, and there's a truck in front of me, towing a dense steel cage with the words "Animal Rescue" on it. It's hard to see through the cage because it's one of those woven, dimond-shaped metal things. So, I'm curious, and I'm trying to see what that shape on the bottom of the cage is. Then it gets up and starts pacing -- it's a full grown Bengal Tiger. You don't see that every day! There are a few wildlife sancuaries down here, I hope it's going to a good home.
