Dec. 31st, 2003 12:00 pmMusic -- year in review (in my favorite genre). The PeterMarcus Yum-Vee awards (from YMMV)
Worst Second Album: Linkin Park. "Numb" isn't too bad, perhaps because I identify with it too much. But the rest...sheesh. (Runner up: Hoobastank)
Best Second Album: Disturbed. The first one was great -- decently written hard rock/metal songs about struggles with madness and insanity, similar to Linkin Park's first. How do you follow this up? With wonderfully written hard rock/metal songs about struggles with God and philosophy. When was the last time a band did that and could pull it off? (Runner up: Coldplay) (I'm skating this one -- Disturbed and Coldplay's albums were released in late 2002, but most of the hits ran through most of 2003).
Best New Group Who Rapidly Became Far Too Overplayed: Evenescence. Beautiful songs...every 37.5 minutes.
Best One-Hit Cover Song, Never to Hear From The Band Again: The Ataris. Who was the last band, especially an alternative one, who had a hit cover song first and followed up with an original hit? I can't remember either. Type O Negative came close, but they're back to fringe.
Best New Group: A Perfect Circle. I'm anxiously waiting to see if they go the way of Disturbed or Linkin Park
Worst Attempt at Art Lauded by the Powers That Be: Audioslave. I love RATM and Cornell, but when I heard they spent a day per song, I understood why this band sucks so bad given the talent of its members. It's a jam session, not art.
Best Blessed Silence from a Band: System of a Down. No album this year -- and there was much rejoicing.
Did I miss any?
