The eye links to the brain through the optic nerve. The ear links to the brain through the auditory nerve. The skin links the sense of touch through tons of nerve junctions, through the spinal cord, and finally to the brain. The tongue transmits the sense of taste through a nerve that I can't remember right now, but it's there.

The nose, while linked somewhat to the sense of taste, links directly to the brain with no real intervening conduit. In a sense, the scent-sensory nerves in the nose are extensions of the brain itself.

You might hear a sound, or see a sight that might remind you of something...just (as they say) on the tip of your tongue. There is a sense of deja vu or familiarity that sometimes is clear, other times may be hard to remember in a specific sense. This is rarely the case with smell -- one scent of something you haven't smelled for years may bring back tumbling memories like snowballs from an avalanche. Women may instinctively understand this more than men do -- the sense of smell, and thus the direct link to memory, is several times more acute in women than men.

Memories abound tonight, the good and the bad, drops of time wafting through cilia, exciting neurons that are perhaps more excited than they should be tonight.
