I'm not surprised -- I've seen the writing on the wall for months, and I know the goal of project work is to get the client just to the point where they don't need us any more. I've had something of an epiphany this last year about project work in general. It's something I want to move from, into service or product, and something from which I've been working fairly hard after hours. Still, client #1 has been client #1 and they've always had to come first in my thoughts and effort for a variety of reasons, from ethical to legal.
They gave me what will almost certainly be three weeks notice. And what do I feel? Relief, actually. I was hoping I could keep them going for a bit longer, but one always wants to keep these things going a bit longer. When it gets right down to it, I've been cut loose from having to worry about them full time, and I can move my thoughts and effort to my own projects.
Of course, there's the minor issue of how I'm going to pay bills and stuff a month from now...but that's a month from now :) I'm hoping I might have some new income by then from the new client #1.
