May. 13th, 2002 05:31 pmLook west after sunset tonight.
In order, from 30-40 degrees above the horizon, slightly diagonal towards the horizon:
Jupiter, bright white/yellow, above all the others.
Venus, under Jupiter a ways, veryvery bright white. Can't miss this.
Mars, fainter, just underneath Venus and red
Saturn, white, under Mars and slightly to the left/south
Mercury, to the right/east of Saturn and faint
Thin crescent moon, right next to Mercury
This kind of planetary conjunction is rare. Like, maybe your grandkids will see something just like it. It'll be pretty interesting for the next few days, but the crescent moon is what's really going to make it fun.

May. 13th, 2002 10:04 pmFishing in the Indian River, watching the planets sink over mainland Florida. I followed a strange meteor burn through the sky; its path twisted and bobbed in a corkscrew before flickering into nothing.
I caught catfish after catfish with a stingray or two to break up the monotony. Work some more tomorrow for a local client, then back home tomorrow night for a couple days.
