Feb. 9th, 2002 12:32 amAh, that too-buzzed state that is slightly shy of drunk, but intoxicated none the less.
South African restaurant, in the bar, watching the Opening Ceremonies while eating a perfectly prepared calimari steak. I mean perfect -- if you undercook or overcook by 10 seconds, the squid gets all chewy and rubberbandy, and is not a nice experience. These folk know exactly what they're doing. Add some seared prawns with Hake (a fish I have to research -- I had it in Barcelona and loved it then, but it is not one of my normal sportfishing species to my knowledge.) Man, a wonderful meal.
Started with my fav vodka martini, moved to a South African whiskey after dinner that tasted a little more like scotch (a bit sweet in a malty kinda way.) Finished off with a South African red wine that was fruity, but as dark as a gritty Bordeaux.
Watching the opening ceremonies, knowing that 4 billion people, nearly 2/3 of the planet, is watching simultaneously, probably half a billion watching half-drunk in bars like myself...in complete seriousness the numbers are stunning. We were guessing the final torch bearer and I came closest. I guessed Steve Craig, the goalie from the 1980 US hockey team...mainly because he went to the same school as I. It was a lucky guess to get the teammember, but they were all there. Beautiful. The procession of nations was lovely, marred only by the McDonalds and Bud Lite commercials that were forced into the ceremony.
