Oct. 13th, 2001 12:57 amSipping the last of a shot of Jack Daniels, I'm mellow tonight. Or should I say this morning? I'm heading for bed in a bit.
I'm feeling odd. I took one of those e-tests that has been floating around, this time related to the philosophy of morality. My results hit a nerve...but I'm probably going to post later about that, when the booze is out of the brain and I can concentrate on the meaning.
But, philosophy and morality are in my brain now for other reasons. I don't have a tremendous amound of money in the stock market, but I do have some. I've been doing well lately when the rest of the market is tanking. I realized today why that was -- I've had a chunk of my portfolio in the biotech field for a while. I think over the next decade biotech is probably going to be the next breakthrough field. Think computers in the '80s.
Biotech is doing pretty good lately for unsettling reasons. DNA testing of WTC victims, anthrax strain tests, biowarfare prophylaxis. I'm thoughtful. I feel funny making money off of tragedy (just a tiny bit, in the whole scheme of things) , yet I'm proud to own microscopic pieces of companies that are using controversial technologies for so much good in a bad situation.
The morality of capitalism. I trust it in most situations, not because of illusions of "the perfect system" but because the only real thing going for it is that it's 10 times better than any other system humanity has ever come up with. However, it must be tested and watched and mulled over...and often held against the light of one's personal morality.

Oct. 13th, 2001 10:53 pmWent hiking today with a friend at Red Top Mountain, a park on a local lake. The leaves are starting to turn, but we're still a week or so from peak. Still trying to get the hang of my new cam. Here's a shot around the lake bend:

Once the sun started to head down, we kept seeing deer everywhere. We came across a beautiful 5-point whitetail buck, but the light was low and I jiggled the cam.

Fun day. I'm exhausted, though. Think I'll be getting some sleep soon.
