I get home from work and the gate outside my community is busted. Everyone is going in the out gate, since it's wide open. I get to my apt, turn on the lights, and no light.

The problem with three years of drought is that the trees get dry. One 15 minute storm, like we had this afternoon, and all the tree branches take out the power lines.

So, I have no power. I hit the bathroom, and am surprised again when I try to turn on the light. I hit the fridge and again I'm surprised by the darkness in my fridge. I go to my computer...by this time it's sinking through my dense skull that this isn't going to work, either.

I read, instead, by the fading light. Good book: Rough Water, a collection of stories about survival on the sea during bad conditions. Mixed fiction and fact, with the true stories seemingly more unbelievable than the fiction. I recommend it to anyone interested in the ocean.

Anyway, the light fades, so I figure I'll at least work on my laptop for a couple of hours. Wrong -- the battery is gone from my Boston biz trip. I forgot to charge it.

I figure I have a sure-fire method of getting the power on. I go across the street to the grocery store and buy candles. I get home...and this is getting annoying. No power.

What to do? I hit a local brew-pub, had beer, and called my own phone until my answering machine answered.

I drove back through the rain-slicked streets of Atlanta, window down, listening to one good song after another on the radio. I watched the skyline reflect off the road and smelled the heat steam off the road. I love this city.
